Does 3D composite decking fade?
2026-11-04 16:22:32
Yes, 3D composite decking does fade but how much depends on the board. For the most part, the colour change is a modest lightening, caused by sunshine bleaching the wood fibre near the surface. A capped board (UV stabilised) will move less than an uncapped board. Deep embossing may mask some of the movement. This tutorial describes the causes of fading in 3D composite decking and what is a natural change. Also teaches you how to test samples before you commit to a colour. I wrote it for brand owners, retail buyers and specifiers who require statistics and test procedures, not slogans.
Want to view fading statistics before choosing a colour? Everdur is a 3D composite decking manufacturer with 50+ lines of production and a minimum order of 100 SQM. Does 3D Composite Decking Fade Over Time?
The Short Answer: Yes, but Not Like Timber
Every exterior surface changes when exposed to sunlight, and 3D composite decking is no exception. In both cases, sunlight affects wood-plastic composites (WPCs), a combination of wood fibre and plastic. One of the major issues customers see with WPC decking is fading (Stark and Mueller, 2008). Fabiyi et al. (2008) showed that colour change and lightness increased as the weathering time increased in outdoor and accelerated testing. Expect some change. The questions that matter are how much, how rapidly and how evenly.
Everdur manufactures 3D composite decking with rich wood grain that's produced inline during extrusion. This procedure affects the texture, but it does not alter the physics of sunlight. Colour stability is a function of the formula, the cap, and the UV package. Everdur is guarantyd to have a minimum fade rating of over 2000 hours of UV exposure. I encourage customers to use that number as a starting point, and ask them what test procedure is behind it.
What Fading Looks Like on a Real Deck
Fading seldom seems as a sudden loss of colour. Most decks lighten unevenly and a little. Sun-exposed surfaces go lighter while those beneath pots or furniture remain darker. Deep grain provides more dimension. Ridges pick up the light, valleys remain dark, therefore the eye reads texture before it reads colour. One reason brand owners choose for embossed boards. That said I do recommend testing, a visual advantage on day one is no guarantee of an edge in year three.SEND INQUIRY
What Factors Cause 3D Composite Decking to Fade?
Wood Fiber Bleaching and Extractive Loss
Wood fiber is the main driver. Stark and Mueller note that losing color-giving extractives from the wood may explain part of the fade. Pigments usually go only into the plastic matrix, even though the wood may drive much of the change. Fabiyi and colleagues tie lightening to oxidation and breakdown of wood lignin, the compound that gives wood much of its brown tone . Put simply, sunlight bleaches the fiber, and the surface turns paler.
Plastic Matrix, Cap Layer, and Additives
The plastic matters too. Fabiyi et al. found that HDPE-based composites lightened less than polypropylene-based ones . Everdur uses Grade A recycled HDPE. The cap layer adds an extra line of defense. Stark and Matuana (2009) report that an earlier clear cap improved water sorption early on, but weathering cracked it and caused delamination . Cap chemistry deserves its own line in your specification.
Heat, Moisture, and Dirt That Mimic Fading
Not all the dull patches are disappearing. Pollen and soil and mould may dull a surface, and thick grain provides dirt additional places to settle. Then customers complain about fading that a cleaning would solve. Train your sales staff to ask one inquiry before every claim: Has anybody cleaned the slate? That behaviour saves returns and maintains the reputation of your brand.SEND INQUIRY
How Much Color Change Is Normal for 3D Composite Decking?
Measuring Change with Delta E
Colour scientists quantify change using a number called delta E (∆E). It is the distance between two colours in the CIELAB colour space, and a greater value indicates a larger perceptible difference. Waldron and Moyer (2009) performed accelerated weathering tests on WPC samples without protection. The samples showed a substantial lightening and the reported CIELAB values were between 13 and 14. That statistic indicates how big the swing may be without protection. It's not a target for your goods.
Setting an Acceptable Range in Your Specification
There's no one ΔE limit for every brand. A high-end private label brand may need a stricter restriction than an entry level shelf. I would propose that you include three things in the buy spec for textured composite flooring. The test technique, the time of exposure and the highest ΔE at that time. Request the lab report. One of the criteria for grading WPC deck boards is a UV resistance test as specified in ASTM D7032. Use as a basis frame and put your own colour restriction over top.
Everdur says it has negligible fade after 2000+ hours of UV exposure. Ask us the technique and the readings on which that assertion was based and compare with any competitor's statistics. A supplier that shares numbers openly gives you something to defend in a retailer meeting or a design review.SEND INQUIRY
How Long Does 3D Composite Decking Retain Its Original Color?
Why No Honest Supplier Can Promise a Single Number
3D composite decking colour permanence varies on environment, colour and exposure. A deck in a high-sun market will weather quicker than one under a Nordic canopy. Accelerated exams reduce time, but they don't transfer cleanly to years. The user selects the exposure settings, but its lamp equipment replicates the effects of sunshine and moisture, according to ASTM G154. A lab hour is not the same as a field hour.
So ask for the complete image, light kind, cycle, hours and the change measured. Request measurements at many places of exposure. A curve shows whether the board settles or drifts on. One number by itself means virtually nothing.
Warranty as a Practical Signal
Warranty conditions are indicative of how a provider regards his own goods. Everdur provides a 15-year warranty for co-extrusion hollow decking and a 20-year warranty for solid co-extrusion decking. Classic lines have shorter terms: 5 years for hollow, 10 years for solid and 5 years for decking tiles. Read what each warranty entails. Many define fading by a measured ΔE, so enquire if yours does. Incorporate the phrasing and measuring technique in your agreement.SEND INQUIRY
Does 3D Composite Decking Fade Less Than Traditional Composite Decking?
Embossing Depth and Visual Perception
Deep embossing on 3D effect decking will not halt fading, but it may alter the way people view it. Lightening as one field appears on a flat board. A deep grain board leaves ridges and valleys in the surface, and the shaded valleys have a deeper tone. The contrast might obscure tiny changes. I don't know of any published studies that quantify this impact, therefore I consider it a hypothesis and test it on samples.
Where 3D Boards Can Lose Ground
Depth poses two threats to 3D composite decking. Deep grain may trap dirt and provide a faded aspect that leads to complaints. If the procedure doesn't manage thickness, a deep valley may potentially thin the top. Ask the provider how the cap thickness is maintained at the deepest part of the grain, not only on the ridge. There is no post pressing phase since Everdur creates the grain inline during extrusion. Post-pressing is typically linked by buyers with the chance of delamination.
Side-by-Side Comparison for Brand Buyers
The following table compares three popular kinds of surface. It displays what you need to check since each row requires sample proof before you can trust it.
| Factor | Flat or brushed board | Uncapped embossed board | Everdur 3D composite decking |
|---|---|---|---|
| How texture forms | Brushing or light pressing | Pressing or inline, varies by supplier | Deep grain formed inline during extrusion |
| Fade visibility | One even field, shifts show clearly | Depends on formula and stabilizers | Ridges and shaded valleys may mask small shifts |
| Dirt in the surface | Low | Medium to high | Deep grain needs a soft-brush routine |
| Weight | Varies | Varies | Hollow profiles run 20–30% lighter than solid |
| Verify before buying | UV report and ΔE | Cap or stabilizer details | Cap thickness in grain valleys, ΔE at set hours |
No row in this table replaces a sample test. Use it as a checklist of the questions to ask each supplier, and compare the written answers side by side.SEND INQUIRY
How Does UV Exposure Affect 3D Composite Decking Color?
What UV Does to Wood and Plastic
UV light carries enough energy to break chemical bonds. In the wood, it attacks lignin. Fabiyi and colleagues linked lignin oxidation and loss to lightening on weathered WPC surfaces . In the plastic, UV drives oxidation, and the same study measured rising carbonyl concentrations, a marker of that change, as exposure time grew . Both effects add up to a paler surface.
UV Stabilizers and Cap Chemistry
Stabilizers slow these reactions. Stark and Matuana report that nano-TiO2 or a photostabilizer package helped prevent cap cracking and supported color retention after 1,000 hours of xenon-arc weathering . They also found a negative interaction when both were combined . More additive is not always better. Waldron and Moyer found that clear acrylic topcoats with light stabilizers can improve the color stability of WPC decking.
Ask your supplier which stabilizer system sits in the cap. A vague answer such as UV protection tells you nothing. A named system with test hours gives you something to verify. Everdur's 3D composite decking carries a UV-stabilized color system, and we share the details with qualified buyers.SEND INQUIRY
Do Different 3D Composite Decking Colors Fade at Different Rates?
Why Color Changes the Look of Fading
Yes, colors of 3D composite decking differ in how visible the change is. Stark and Mueller note that pigments usually go into the plastic matrix, while the wood may drive the shift. As the wood lightens, a dark board reveals more of the change. A light board starts closer to the bleached tone, so the shift reads smaller. This is my reading of the mechanism. I confirm it with samples before any color launch.
A Color-by-Color Look at the Everdur Range
Everdur offers 3D composite decking in Ash Grey, Cedar, Coffee, Copper Brown, Dark Grey, Grey, Ivory, Mocha, Sandal Wood, Stone Grey, Teak, Walnut, and custom colors. The table groups them by tone. It shows a typical pattern, so confirm each color with your own samples.
| Tone family | Colors | How a shift tends to read | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Ivory | Small lightening is hard to see, dirt shows more | Cleaning routine and stain test |
| Mid-tone greys | Ash Grey, Grey, Stone Grey | Shifts blend into the natural weathered look | ΔE at set UV hours |
| Mid-tone woods | Teak, Cedar, Sandal Wood | Streaked grain hides small changes | Grain contrast after exposure |
| Dark browns | Coffee, Mocha, Walnut, Copper Brown | Contrast between exposed and covered areas grows | Masked-panel test, batch match |
| Charcoal | Dark Grey | Lightening shows clearly on dark tones | Cap stabilizers, heat, ΔE |
Custom colors follow the same logic. Send us a target shade, and we match it to your brief. Then run the masked-panel test described below on the production sample before you approve the order.SEND INQUIRY
Which 3D Composite Decking Colors Resist Fading Best?
Four Color Strategies for Brand Owners
No colour of 3D composite decking is fade-proof, although some are better at hiding it. The four colour concepts I talk most about with brand owners are:
- Mid-tone greys and sand shades: These colours are similar to the tone that aged wood fibre achieves so a change reads as natural ageing rather than damage. They are good for store shelves where people compare multiple boards and don't want to see any noticeable change. Try each shade regardless, however, since the effect is still dictated by pigment load and cap quality.
- Multi-tone wood grain look:Streaked patterns with several tones conceal minor movements, since the eye can't pick out one single colour to utilise as a contrast. Deep embossing produces darkened troughs which assists further . This is the method most Everdur brand clients pick for distinctive designs, and it goes nicely with a capped surface.
- Dark browns and charcoals: These tints have a rich, high-end appearance on a showroom floor but reveal the biggest difference when the wood lightens. Covered regions are behind open parts also. Select these with a capped board and documented stabiliser system. Request ΔE data at your desired exposure hours before committing to a launch colour.
- Very light colours: Ivory and similar colours conceal lightening effectively, but dirt and stains become more visible. Create a retail care sheet and cleaning schedule for your consumers. Otherwise consumers will report dirt as faults and your service staff will waste time on issues a soft brush can remedy.
These tactics function best when combined. Vary your risk using a combination of one dark hero colour and two mid-tone patterns. The dark colour has border and the mid-tones have volume.
Keeping Batches Consistent Across Reorders
The biggest concern for brand owners is restocking batches of textured composite flooring that don't match the opening order. Take a sealed golden sample of each colour and design to cover yourself. ΔE tolerance agreed in the contract. Each fresh batch tested against a golden sample. Ask any provider, including us, to give you in writing that they own the mould and have exclusivity on the design. With its ODM and OEM service, Everdur provides unique surface patterns and double-sided surface patterns.SEND INQUIRY
How Can You Test the Fade Resistance of 3D Composite Decking?
Lab Methods: Xenon Arc and Fluorescent UV
Labs accelerate weathering using xenon-arc or fluorescent UV chambers. Stark and Matuana compared cap formulations with 1,000 hours of xenon-arc exposure. Fluorescent UV light exposure is covered by ASTM G154. It suggests to run a control of known performance together with your sample and at least three duplicates. Ask your supplier to follow that rationale. A control, duplicate and complete report.
A Masked-Panel Field Test You Can Run Yourself
Here is the screening exam I propose. 3 boards must be chosen from 3 manufacturing batches. Clean each and take a picture next to a grey card. Cover half of each board with a piece of opaque material. Put the boards on the outside, facing the strongest sun on your site. Uncover and measure at weeks 4, 8 and 12. Wipe off dirt before each reading, so you are comparing colour, not filth.
The real change is in the line between the masked and exposed portions. Or compare images taken in the same light. Or take readings using a hand-held spectrophotometer. Run the test with all colours of candidates, use the board from your actual provider as control. Treat this as a purchase screen, not a confirmed value. Use official data from an approved laboratory.
Documents to Request Before You Sign Off
Retail buyers should ask for the full compliance pack and check that the certificate holder matches the supplying entity. Everdur lists ISO 9001, CE, FSC, REACH, and RoHS, with Intertek testing, and we share documents on request. Specifiers should ask for technical data sheets and fire classification reports under the standards their project requires.SEND INQUIRY
How Can You Maintain 3D Composite Decking to Minimize Fading?
Cleaning Routines That Protect the Surface
Maintenance for 3D composite decking is light, but deep grain rewards a routine. Sweep leaves and grit from the surface, then rinse with clean water. For stubborn marks, use mild soap and a soft brush, and work along the grain. Avoid harsh abrasives, because scratches damage the cap that protects the core. Everdur boards need no painting, staining, or sealing, which removes a whole category of maintenance cost.
Placement, Rotation, and Furniture Habits
Uneven exposure creates uneven color in 3D effect decking. Fabiyi and colleagues showed that color change grows with exposure time, so areas under rugs or planters lag behind open areas. Move furniture, mats, and planters from time to time. Choose breathable mats instead of rubber backing, and keep leaves out of the gaps. These habits keep the deck looking even as the whole surface ages.

Why Brand Owners Source 3D Composite Decking from Everdur
Consistency decides whether an exclusive pattern in 3D composite decking stays matched. Everdur runs more than 50 wood-plastic production lines with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons, and 16 years of production experience. We export to more than 60 countries and serve 225 customers, over 100 of them active. Our export customers include building-materials chains such as Lidl, Hagebau, Hornbach, Hellweg, and Globus. Strict 5S site management supports each shipment.
Those numbers matter because color control depends on repeatable production. A stable formula and steady cap thickness come from disciplined lines. Visit the factory, review the records, and judge us on evidence.SEND INQUIRY
Conclusion
3D composite decking fades, and the honest goal is a controlled, even change. Wood fiber bleaches, the plastic oxidizes, and the cap and stabilizers decide how fast that happens. Deep embossing may hide small shifts, but only a sample test confirms it. Color choice, cap thickness, and cleaning habits all change the outcome.
Use evidence in every supplier talk. Ask for the test method, the exposure hours, the ΔE readings, and the warranty wording. Run the masked-panel test on production boards from three batches. Then choose the color and the pattern you can defend. 3D composite decking can give your brand a lasting premium look when you buy on data instead of promises.SEND INQUIRY
FAQ
Q: Does 3D composite decking fade in the sun?
A: Yes, 3D composite decking lightens over time. Research shows that longer weathering increases color change in wood-plastic composites . A capped, UV-stabilized board changes less, and the change often reads as an even, natural aging.
Q: How much fading is normal in year one?
A: No universal number exists. Unprotected samples in accelerated tests showed CIELAB values of 13 to 14. Set your own ΔE limit, the test method, and the exposure hours in the purchase contract.
Q: Does deep embossing make fading less visible?
A: It can. Shaded valleys keep a darker tone and break up the surface, so small shifts blend in. Published studies on this are scarce, so test samples with a masked-panel method before you rely on the effect.
Q: Do dark colors fade more than light colors?
A: Dark colors show a bigger contrast as the wood fiber lightens, so the change looks larger. Light colors hide lightening but show dirt more. Test each color, because pigment load and cap quality also matter.
Q: Can you restore faded composite decking?
A: Cleaning restores the look when dirt caused the dullness. Lightening of the wood fiber does not reverse. Ask your supplier before you apply any coating, because it may affect the warranty.
Q: What minimum order does Everdur accept?
A: Our MOQ for 3D composite decking is 100 SQM. We send color cards and embossed samples, ship FOB from Shanghai or Ningbo, and customize colors, patterns, and labels.
